S'pore opposition leader to Gore party
SINGAPORE (AFP): Opposition leader Chee Soon Juan is to take
his fight for greater democracy in Singapore to the democratic
heartland in the United States when he attends Al Gore's
presidential nomination, the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP)
said on Friday.
Chee, twice jailed for defying restrictions on public
political gatherings, has been invited to next week's Democratic
National Convention in Los Angeles where Vice President Gore will
be officially nominated as presidential candidate.
He will be among 500 heads of government, parliamentarians,
ambassadors and political leaders also attending the
International Leaders Forum (ILF) being held in conjunction with
the convention.
Chee, a U.S. trained neuropsycholgist, is the secretary
general of the SDP which lost all three of its parliamentary
seats in the ballot.
