S'pore opposition begs to see voters
SINGAPORE (AP): An opposition party in Singapore urged
authorities on Wednesday to allow it to hold a political rally
and asked if the government was deliberately trying to foil its
quest to reach voters.
The Singapore Democratic Party said on Wednesday it had
written to authorities asking them to approve a July 18
application "without further delay" so it can organize the event.
The group wants to hold the rally at an outdoor sports stadium
on Aug. 26.
Public events in Singapore require a permit and political
rallies are extremely rare. In April, 2,000 people attended an
anti-government rally at a stadium - the first event of its kind
since the tightly controlled city-state became independent 36
years ago.
The People's Action Party has ruled Singapore with a firm grip
since independence.
