S'pore oil spill captain charged
SINGAPORE (Reuters): Prosecutors laid yesterday a second charge against the captain of a ship involved in a tanker collision that spewed almost 29,000 tons of oil into the Singapore Strait.
Michael Chalkitis, Greek captain of the Cyprus-flagged oil tanker Evoikos, was charged with failing to keep a proper look- out, an offense which carries a fine of Singapore $10,000 (US$6,100).
The 58-year-old Chalkitis already faces a charge of reckless navigation. That carries maximum punishment of a fine of S$50,000 and two years in jail.
Chalkitis will be back in court today for a pretrial conference along with Jan Sokolowski, the Polish captain of the Thai supertanker Orapin Global.
