S'pore library to set up ASEAN network
SINGAPORE (DPA): Singapore's National Library Board has been
picked by ASEAN leaders to set up a shared information resource
base for the 10-country grouping, it was reported on Wednesday.
The project seeks to enable 500 million people to enjoy 40
million titles available at national libraries in the countries
belonging to ASEAN in addition to obtaining access to web-based
and multimedia resources, Channel NewsAsia said.
The information to be provided by the ASEAN Information
Network will be in English and the indigenous languages. "We will
essentially be providing the infrastructure and the advice," R.
Ramachandran, the library board's assistant chief executive, told
the station.
"The other countries in the region are not as well developed
especially digitally and electronically," Ramachandran observed.
"Therefore we will attempt to fill the gaps and link up the
libraries concerned."
