S'pore Lee's visit 'constructive'

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): The Malaysian foreign minister described on Friday the just-ended visit by Singapore Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew as a "constructive and productive" development in bilateral relations.

"We are always positive to any action to enhance ties between Malaysia and Singapore. I believe his visit will work toward enhancing bilateral ties," Syed Hamid Albar told reporters.

Lee, at the end of a four-day visit on Thursday, said disputes which had dogged relations for years could be solved within months, given compromises on both sides.

Syed Hamid said it was "ultimately" left to Singapore Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong to discuss the disputes with Mahathir.

Relations have often been prickly since Singapore was ejected from the federation of Malaysia in 1965, two years after it was founded.
