S'pore gets tough on drink-driving
SINGAPORE (AFP): Singapore has signaled its determination to curb drink-driving with a binge of fines, license suspensions and jail terms for motorists found to have had one too many during the last holiday season.
"During the holidays we do step up enforcement," police spokesman Lim Chin Tiak said yesterday, a day after 28 motorists were penalized by a district court for exceeding the legal limit for blood alcohol levels. All had pleaded guilty.
The crackdown was publicized as the largely Chinese island of three million prepared for an even more important holiday, the Lunar New Year in February.
