S'pore extends war insurance for SIA subsidiaries, Changi

The Singaporean government said on Friday it will extend war risk
insurance to four subsidiaries of flag carrier Singapore Airlines
and the operator of Changi Airport for another six months.

Singapore, like the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and
many other governments, has provided its international airport
with war and terrorism coverage since the Sept. 11, 2001,
hijacked plane attacks in the United States, after which private
insurance companies canceled all policies and imposed higher
premiums for new ones.

The extended insurance will cover the Civil Aviation Authority
of Singapore, which manages Changi Airport, the Transport
Ministry said in a statement.

It will also apply to four subsidiaries of the Singapore
Airlines Group, including SATS Services, SATS Catering, SATS
Security and SIA Engineering Company, the statement said.

Singapore's government-subsidized coverage expired this week,
but with the extension it will continue until Oct. 31 this year,
the statement said.

The government also previously provided war insurance coverage
for Singapore Airlines and its units Silkair and SIA Cargo, but
the companies have since obtained policies elsewhere.
