S'pore detains foreign reporter

SINGAPORE (Reuter): A journalist working for a U.S. news agency was detained in Singapore yesterday.

Eyewitnesses said the Associated Press (AP) Singapore news editor Vijay Joshi, an Indian national, was taken away in handcuffs by police after an argument on the sidelines of a joint news conference by British Foreign Secretary Malcolm Rifkind and Singapore Foreign Minister Shanmugam Jayakumar.

Rifkind arrived in Singapore yesterday ahead of a series of meetings between ministers from Asia and the European Union.

Witnesses said there had been scuffles at the news conference as reporters tried to get past Singapore officials to reach the ministers.
