S'pore considers HIV-spouse return
SINGAPORE (AP): The government is considering whether to allow the return of foreign women married to Singaporeans who were expelled because they were HIV-positive, a spokeswoman said on Monday.
Singapore Immigration spokeswoman Sharon Wong declined to say how many of the nine women deported in May had appealed the expulsion.
The women were mainly from Thailand, Indonesia, China and the Philippines. They were not Singaporean citizens, carrying instead social passes that allow them to stay in Singapore for a period of up to one year.
Under Singapore's Immigration Act, non-citizens who have the HIV virus that causes AIDS are classified as "prohibited immigrants."
