S'pore activists plan political rally
SINGAPORE (AP): Pro-democracy activists in Singapore said on
Friday that they plan a rare rally in support of veteran
opposition politician Joshua "J.B.J." Jeyaretnam, who could be
expelled from Parliament as a bankrupt.
Jeyaretnam, the 74-year-old leader of the Workers' Party, is
one of three opposition members in the 93-member parliament.
Political rallies and demonstrations are extremely rare in the
tightly controlled city-state, where public gatherings require
permission from police.
Rally organizers plan to give pro-democracy speeches and sell
books, T-shirts and stickers to raise money for Jeyaretnam at the
March 31 event at a sports stadium, organizer Jacob George said.
