JAKARTA – The surge in electric vehicle usage during this year’s Eid al-Fitr homecoming brings positive news for the development of the EV ecosystem in Indonesia. PT PLN (Persero) recorded the highest daily transaction at Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (SPKLU), signalling increasing public trust in electric cars for long-distance journeys. This record occurred on Monday (23/3) or H+2 of Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah. In one day, electric vehicle charging transactions reached 18,088 times with energy consumption of 427,980 kilowatt hours (kWh). The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Bahlil Lahadalia, views this surge as a strong signal that electric vehicle usage in Indonesia continues to grow. He emphasised that this increase is inseparable from the increasingly massive construction of SPKLU infrastructure. “But electric cars won’t proliferate if we don’t build the SPKLU infrastructure,” he said. PLN’s President Director, Darmawan Prasodjo, echoed this sentiment. According to him, the high transaction figures during the homecoming reflect growing public confidence in the reliability of the infrastructure provided by PLN and its partners. To support this surge, PLN and its partners have provided 4,769 SPKLU units at 3,097 locations across Indonesia, with an average distance between SPKLU of around 22 kilometres. Specifically on the main homecoming routes of Trans Sumatra, Java, and Bali, there are 1,681 SPKLU units at 994 points, both on toll roads and non-toll roads, an increase of around 70 per cent compared to the previous Eid al-Fitr. The increase is not only in quantity but also in service quality. Several SPKLU with high occupancy rates have now been upgraded from standard charging to fast charging and even ultra-fast charging, making charging times shorter.
