The Chief of the National Police Traffic Corps (Kakorlantas Polri) Irjen Agus Suryonugroho has predicted that an increase in the number of vehicles leaving for Lebaran 2026 will occur on Sunday (15 March) this evening.

Agus stated that his office has prepared various scenarios to address the surge of homebound traffic.

“We are anticipating a potential rise in traffic flow after the breaking of the fast. However, preparations for traffic management engineering scenarios are already in place, whether we will implement contraflow in the evening and at night, or possibly one-way arrangements, we have already prepared these measures whilst awaiting further updates,” Agus told journalists.

According to Agus, based on current data, 25 per cent of homebound vehicles have already left Jakarta, heading towards the Trans Java Toll Road, Bandung, or Sumatra.

Agus noted that the application of traffic engineering measures would be based on actual data. If data shows an increase, traffic engineering measures will be implemented to prevent congestion.

“Because we work not based on predictions, but on traffic counting at that moment which we will monitor continuously, both from CCTV and from radar, and we also deploy ETLE drones every three hours to monitor real-time conditions.

For implementing the contraflow scheme, Agus explained this would be done based on vehicle volume calculations through the radar system.

“So at kilometre 47 there is a radar. This radar counts the number of vehicles. If for one consecutive hour, the count reaches 5,500, we will automatically report to the Police Chief, and we will implement contraflow traffic engineering for lane 1. This means the density level and deceleration rate can be monitored,” he said.

“Secondly, if in the next consecutive hour it increases to 6,400, we will implement contraflow for lane 2. So there is a mechanism, not a prediction. But this parameter will become our guideline,” he added.

Additionally, Agus stated that his office would also use CCTV monitoring and ETLE drones to observe the traffic flow situation.

“To monitor conditions from kilometre 47 to 70. If there is still congestion and deceleration, we will report to leadership and implement one-way arrangements in sections, initially at the first-stage one-way location national sites. So not yet full national one-way,” he concluded.
