Sperm whale washes up

GENERAL NAKAR, Philippines (AFP): A 15.7-meter live sperm
whale beached itself on the coast of this Philippines town
southeast of Manila, the mayor said on Friday.

Town Mayor Hernando Avellaneda said fishermen found the
weakened whale on a beach on Monday. Experts of the national
museum who specialize in large mammals were called in but by the
time they reached the isolated town on Wednesday, the whale had
died.

Portions of the whale were then sliced off and sold for meat
by local residents, the mayor said.

No one in the area could recall a similar beaching before,
Avellaneda said.
