Speed up flood response: DKI Jakarta Province deploys 1,200 pumps
Jakarta — The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government has deployed 1,200 flood-control pumps as a rapid response to tackle inundation and flooding following heavy rains that drenched the capital from Saturday night through Sunday.
‘Since last night I have coordinated with the ranks, especially the Water Resources Service. In fact, pumping at several points has begun since the night,’ said DKI Governor Pramono Anung in a statement in Jakarta on Sunday.
He explained that about 1,200 flood-control pumps had been deployed, comprising 668 stationary pumps at 243 locations and 536 mobile pumps placed at various flood-prone sites.
‘Water pumping continues, including in Jalan Daan Mogot, West Jakarta, and several other main road sections,’ he said.
He also added that rainfall in Jakarta and its surroundings was very high. In one day, rainfall intensity reached 264 millimetres, far above the average daily rainfall.
‘Today in Jakarta and its surroundings, rainfall reached 264 millimetres per day. That is very high rainfall,’ he said.
In the medium term, the DKI Provincial Government continues to bolster flood control through a river normalisation programme. Normalisation is currently being carried out on three main rivers: Ciliwung, Cakung Lama, and Krukut.
‘Normalisation of Kali Cakung Lama is targeted to be completed in 2027 and is expected to significantly reduce flood risk in several Jakarta areas,’ he said.
According to data from the Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) up to 17:00 WIB, floods have submerged 74 RTs and inundated 15 road segments in several areas of Jakarta. Water height varied from about 15 centimetres to 1.2 metres at some points.
