Special Yogyakarta Education (PKJ) will be implemented in all schools and universities in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) starting in the next academic year. But what exactly is PKJ?

The Chairman of the DIY Education Council, Sutrisna Wibawa, said that PKJ is the implementation of related subjects. PKJ is an education about the values of character and behaviour that are characteristic of Yogyakarta.

“PKJ is an integrated implementation in related subjects. So PKJ is not a subject, but more about behaviour,” said Sutrisna when contacted by detikJogja, Wednesday (25/2/2026).

Sutrisna explained that this education is about how students should behave in order to be more ‘ngajeni’, which means the concept of Yogyakarta etiquette, such as ‘ungguh-ungguh’.

“We have also launched a ‘ngajeni’ video, so how students should behave, how to show respect,” he said.

He added that PKJ has been tested in 10 schools. It is planned that PKJ will be implemented in all schools and universities in the 2026/2027 academic year.

“We have conducted a trial in 10 schools with 300 students who were assessed. Their attitudes have improved, with an average attitude score of 4.1 out of 5,” he said.

“Therefore, Ngarsa Dalem (Sultan Hamengku Buwono X) immediately ordered the official launch and implementation in all schools and universities in DIY. Between April and May, and it will be implemented in all schools in July, in the 2026/2027 academic year,” Sutrisna concluded.
