Special Bracelet for Nadiem After Becoming House Detainee
Former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Mendikbudristek), Nadiem Anwar Makarim, has officially begun serving house arrest after the Panel of Judges at the Jakarta Corruption Court granted the request to change his detention status. The Attorney General’s Office has fitted an electronic detector bracelet to monitor Nadiem’s movements during his house arrest period.
Compiled from detikcom, Wednesday (13/5/2026), the granting of the request to change detention for Nadiem was read out directly by the Chief Judge of the Panel, Purwanto S. Abdullah, during a hearing held at the Jakarta Corruption Court on Monday (11/5). The change in detention for Nadiem takes effect from Tuesday (12/5).
“It is decided: first, to grant the request of the Defendant’s Legal Counsel to change the type of detention of the Defendant. Second, to change the type of detention of the Defendant Nadiem Anwar Makarim from detention at the Salemba State Detention Centre Branch of the Central Jakarta Prosecutor’s Office to house detention at the Defendant’s residence located at The Residence at Dharmawangsa 2 Unit 1908 RT/RW 01/02, Pulo Village, Kebayoran Baru Subdistrict, South Jakarta City, effective from 12 May 2026,” stated Purwanto when reading the verdict granting the request to change Nadiem’s detention.
Although granting the request, the judge also explained matters that Nadiem must comply with as conditions for house detention. Among them, Nadiem must remain inside the house for 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Nadiem must also agree to have an electronic monitoring device fitted to his body.
If Nadiem violates one or more of the stipulated conditions, the type of detention will be changed back to State Detention Centre detention. The panel of judges’ consideration in granting this request is based on Nadiem’s health factors and not due to other factors.
Attorney General’s Office Fits Detector Bracelet
Head of Public Prosecutors at the Attorney General’s Office, Anang Supriatna, said that the prosecution team has carried out the execution of the said determination on Monday night (11/5). Anang said that Nadiem’s movements will still be monitored.
“Last night the prosecution team has carried out the Panel of Judges’ determination, where for Mr NM it has been changed to house detention,” said Anang at the Attorney General’s Office complex, South Jakarta, on Tuesday (12/5).
Anang said that his side will conduct strict supervision of Nadiem. He said Nadiem cannot leave the house without permission from the panel of judges and the prosecution.
Prosecutors are also implementing standard operating procedure (SOP) for electronic supervision. Anang mentioned that Nadiem has also been fitted with a special detection bracelet.
“Yes, it should be (fitted with a bracelet), as far as I know there is an SOP usually used. But I’ll confirm again. But the standard with us is like that to carry out (house detention),” explained Anang.
“It’s the same for everyone, the important thing is when a detainee is released on parole or (house detention) usually fitted with a bracelet,” he added.
In addition to the use of digital technology, prosecutors are coordinating with authorities to guard Nadiem’s residence.
“He cannot leave the house without permission from the Panel of Judges and the Prosecution. There must be permission. We are also working with security apparatus (police),” said Anang.
Nadiem Gives Thanks
Meanwhile, Nadiem said he feels grateful for the granting of his detention change request by the judge.
“I just want to say alhamdulillah, my gratitude to Allah, I want to thank the panel for their humanity in granting the change of status to house detention,” he added.
