Speaker Puan Maharani Warns Against Hoaxes Dominating Public Discourse
House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Puan Maharani has reminded the public that the public sphere must not be dominated by hate politics, polarisation, and interests that can divide society amidst the rapid flow of information. “Amidst global uncertainty, geopolitical competition, economic fragmentation, and the rapid flow of information, we must ensure the public sphere is not dominated by hate politics, polarisation, and divisive interests,” Puan said in her speech at the parliament complex in Jakarta on Friday. Puan delivered the remarks during the DPR’s 1st Plenary Session of the 2026-2027 Session Year, marking the opening of the First Session Period. According to her, the development of the digital space provides the public with greater opportunities to obtain information, convey aspirations, and offer criticism. However, the rapid flow of information also brings challenges in the form of disinformation, hoaxes, and content that is manipulated or taken out of context, which can sharpen polarisation and blur the line between constructive criticism and divisive provocation. In the context of the DPR, Puan noted the existence of various false information, such as fake quotes attributed to the leadership or members of the DPR. She also highlighted incorrect information regarding the DPR’s stance on the deliberation of draft laws, as well as the use of old video footage with new, out-of-context narratives. Puan stated that this situation must be addressed wisely and proportionally while still respecting criticism, aspirations, and public oversight as an important part of democracy. “At the same time, incorrect information must be corrected swiftly, openly, and based on facts,” she said. The DPR held its 1st Plenary Session of the 2026-2027 Session Year at the parliament complex in Jakarta on Friday. During the session, President Prabowo Subianto delivered the government’s statement on the Draft Law on the State Revenue and Expenditure Budget for the 2027 Fiscal Year along with its Financial Note.
