Speaker Puan Expresses Condolences for Ayatollah Khamenei's Death in US-Israel Attack, Urges UN Action
House Speaker Puan Maharani has expressed condolences to the Iranian people over the conflict that has occurred. Puan also conveyed condolences for the death of Iran’s former supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
This was conveyed by Puan in her speech at the opening of the 15th session of the fourth sitting period 2025-2026 at the Parliamentary Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday, 10 March 2026. Puan initially stated that attacks on Iran by the United States and Israel have disregarded the principle of state sovereignty.
“In the escalation of these military actions, it brings a critical collective understanding that the current military force being used has disregarded the principle of respect for state sovereignty,” she said.
Puan then expressed condolences and called upon the United Nations to act on the situation.
“On behalf of the leadership and members of Indonesia’s House of Representatives, we express our deepest condolences on the passing of the esteemed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, who was killed in a military attack by Israel and America against Iranian territory on 28 February 2026,” she stated.
“Indonesia, as a nation that upholds the principles of independence, eternal peace, and social justice, expresses profound sympathy to all the Iranian people who are facing this difficult period,” she added.
Puan explained that the US-Israel conflict with Iran demonstrates the challenges of global governance. She stated that law and international institutions must play a role in maintaining world stability.
“Indonesia’s House of Representatives urges the United Nations to take action in upholding respect for international law, protection of civilians, and the shared commitment to maintaining global peace and stability,” she said.
