Spate of Regional Leader Arrests is a Disaster, Interior Ministry Must Conduct Evaluation
A member of Commission II of the Indonesian Parliament, Mardani Ali Sera, has characterised the recent wave of sting operations by the Anti-Corruption Commission (KPK) ensnaring numerous regional heads as a disaster. Mardani stressed that the situation has reached an emergency level requiring accountability from all stakeholders.
“First, this is a disaster. And everyone must take responsibility. The situation is already an emergency,” said Mardani when contacted on Wednesday (11 March 2026).
He has urged a comprehensive evaluation between Parliament and the Interior Ministry (Kemendagri) following the arrest of nine regional heads elected in the 2024 regional elections, ranging from the Bupati of East Kolaka and the Governor of Riau to the most recent arrest of the Bupati of Rejang Lebong by the Anti-Corruption Commission.
“Commission II together with the Interior Ministry must conduct a thorough evaluation of these sting operations,” he said.
Mardani has identified two sectors consistently vulnerable to corruption within local government: procurement contracts for goods and services, and civil service promotion or transfer processes. He has urged that both areas be completely overhauled to ensure greater transparency and accountability to close loopholes for bribery.
“The critical points are always in two areas: procurement contracts and job promotions. Both must be made transparent,” stated the legislator from Jakarta I electoral district.
Furthermore, this PKS politician has expressed high appreciation for the Anti-Corruption Commission. According to him, the anti-corruption agency’s diligence in taking action is a necessary step to maintain the integrity of the rule of law in Indonesia.
“We appreciate the KPK’s continued diligence in upholding the law in this situation,” he added.
Another Commission II member, Indrajaya, has also highlighted the series of sting operations by the Anti-Corruption Commission. The most recent case involved the arrest of the Bupati of Rejang Lebong.
Indrajaya further noted that the ongoing corruption practices also demonstrate the weakness of legal reforms championed by the public. He stated that the repeated sting operations conducted by the Anti-Corruption Commission against regional heads do not correlate with the direct election system currently in place.
