Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Deputy for Pollution Control and Environmental Damage (PPKL) of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK)/Environmental Impact Control Agency (BPLH), Rasio Ridho Sani, revealed that the PROPER Environmental Award has become the government’s most consistent programme, having run for three decades. PROPER is a performance assessment programme that encourages companies not only to comply but to seriously implement sustainability.

“PROPER is also a coaching instrument from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, which uses a public disclosure approach. PROPER is a form of democracy in the supervision and management of the environment,” said Ridho in his speech at the PROPER Environmental Award 2025, on Tuesday (7/4/2026).

He emphasised that this step is necessary to provide space for innovation to companies in protecting and managing the environment.

“PROPER has reached 30 years; this is a programme carried out by the government and has been continuously implemented since 1995,” he stated.

The number of PROPER companies in 2025 increased by 22% to 4,495 and became 5,476 from 200 sectors in Indonesia. The number of companies that must be supervised is 72,000 companies, but only 5,476 have been supervised through PROPER.

“We will develop the number of companies assessed through PROPER, with an AI-based system. If 10,000 companies are already supervised, a more complex system is needed,” said Ridho.

Meanwhile, of the 5,476 PROPER participants, 2,437 companies were recorded in the compliant category. Then, 2,886 companies were recorded as non-compliant and their performance is still far from expectations.
