Spain Tightens Borders After 60,000 Immigrants Breach Entry in Single Day
Spain has tightened its borders after approximately 60,000 Moroccan immigrants were reported to have breached the city of Ceuta, the country’s North African enclave, in just one day. The Mayor of Ceuta, Juan Jesus Vivas, stated on Friday that this drastic influx is equivalent to 70 per cent of the city’s total population.
The situation at the border has escalated since Thursday, when thousands of Moroccan youths gathered at the border line, with hundreds successfully penetrating Spanish territory. In response to the migration crisis, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated that extraordinary measures are being considered, including the possibility of freezing the Schengen area’s association with Spain.
‘What happened yesterday must be regarded as an attack and a violation of the territorial integrity of Spain. Ceuta is a Spanish city, and this event deserves our strongest condemnation,’ said Prime Minister Sanchez during a press conference in Ceuta on Friday. As a remedial measure, Sanchez will deploy an additional 400 law enforcement personnel to Ceuta and has ordered the installation of new boundary fences along the border line.
