Spain Rejects US Drive to Attack Iran, Here’s Why
Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, a vocal critic of United States and Israeli attacks on Iran, said that his government’s position is not for war and that the Spanish people oppose such a disaster. He argued that the 2003 invasion of Iraq has left the world less safe, and that war against Iran would not yield a fairer international order, a healthier environment, or improved living standards for ordinary people. Sánchez said the current crisis marks the beginning of a catastrophe for humanity, and added that governments should not toy with the fate of millions. Trump has threatened to cut all trade with Spain for not allowing the US military to use Spain’s bases in missions related to an attack on Iran. A diplomat said that Israel and the United States share the same objective of seeing changes in Iran. According to the diplomat, Iran seeks to send messages via missiles toward Israel and to press on with attacks against various military facilities. How resilient Iran is, or whether it could instead change the balance of power, remains to be seen. Iran, the third-largest producer in OPEC, accounts for around 4.5% of global oil supply.
