Spain Refuses to Allow Its Military Bases to Be Used to Attack Iran, Trump Threatens to Sever Trade Ties
WASHINGTON — US President Donald Trump threatened to halt all trade with Spain after Madrid refused to permit the United States to use its joint military base on Spanish soil for operations against Iran.
The United States, together with its Zionist ally Israel, since Saturday 28 February 2026 has launched its aggression against Iran, which has so far escalated into open conflict stretching across the Middle East region.
“We will halt all trade with Spain,” Trump told reporters during a question-and-answer session with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at the White House in Washington, DC, as cited by Anadolu Agency on Wednesday 4 March 2026.
Trump emphasised that Madrid’s rejection of US use of the base is a form of defiance against the two countries’ cooperation. Therefore, he warned, the US feels entitled to also cut its trade relations with Spain. “We do not want to have ties with Spain,” he said.
The Spanish government had condemned the ongoing Zionist-US aggression against Iran earlier, saying the attack violates international law, harms regional peace, and risks a major global war.
On Monday 2 March 2026, authorities in Madrid stated they would not allow their territory to be used as a launchpad for missiles by the US or Israel against Iran.
Although the US has a joint military base with Spain at Rota near the Strait of Gibraltar, in the Mediterranean, the Spanish government had prohibited its use. Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares stressed that the joint base remains under Madrid’s sovereignty and that Spain will not permit the use of its territory for any activity that violates international law and the UN Charter.
