SpaceX acquires AI coding startup Cursor

SpaceX, the technology company owned by businessman Elon Musk, has officially acquired the startup Cursor, which is widely known for its artificial intelligence (AI)-based coding tool.

According to Engadget on Saturday (15/8), the two companies announced the acquisition in June 2026, but the process had begun as early as April 2026, when SpaceX partnered with Cursor on AI model training.

In its announcement, Cursor stated that it now has access to the “world’s largest GPU fleet”, providing the computing capacity to build and train better models.

According to Cursor, access to the largest GPU fleet enables the company to offer better AI models at lower cost.

The company was officially announced as being renamed SpaceXAI in July 2026 and shortly afterwards released Grok 4.5, the first model developed jointly by SpaceXAI and Cursor.

That model was designed to “excel at coding, agentic tasks, and knowledge-based work” and to deliver results “at significantly lower cost.”

Since then, they have released Grok 4.6, which is an evolution of 4.5.

The newer model was trained to perform real-world tasks such as general coding, web development, and computer-aided design.

Cursor stated that Grok 4.6 provides an early glimpse of what they can build together with SpaceXAI.
