KUALA LUMPUR (AP): Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad
proclaimed Sunday the new height for Mount Kinabalu, Southeast
Asia's highest peak, was 4,095.2 meters above sea level.
That's 5.8 meters lower than the previously measured height,
the national news agency Bernama reported from Kota Kinabalu on
the island of Borneo, near the mountain.
"I proclaim that Low's Peak is the highest point of Mount
Kinabalu at 4,095.2 meters," he said at a dinner.
The new height was established with the use of satellites
during a June expedition. The mountain was first listed at 4,101
meters in 1910 by Learmont's British expedition, which used older
methods, such as a ship's sextant.
