South Tangerang City Government Targets 3,280 New Streetlights in 2026

The South Tangerang City Government is continuing to strengthen the distribution of street lighting across the city through the ‘Tangsel Terang’ programme. This year, 3,280 new Public Street Lighting (PJU) points are targeted for construction to improve public safety, comfort, and mobility. “The city government will continue to strive to provide evenly distributed street lighting through the Tangsel Terang programme,” said South Tangerang Mayor Benyamin Davnie on Friday. He confirmed that the thousands of PJU points are ensured to be facilitated so that residents can carry out their activities safely and comfortably in South Tangerang City.

Mayor Benyamin Davnie stated that street lighting is a basic infrastructure that remains a focus of the city government because it directly impacts community activities, especially at night. The presence of PJU not only serves as illumination but also supports road user safety and creates a safer environment for the community. “I have instructed the South Tangerang City Transportation Agency to continuously accelerate the follow-up on public reports regarding street lighting so that residents’ needs can be met immediately,” he said.

Head of the South Tangerang City Transportation Agency, Ayep Jajat Sudrajat, explained that in addition to building new PJU, his agency is also accelerating the repair of malfunctioning streetlights. As of 30 June 2026, the agency has repaired 2,718 light points spread across 1,788 locations throughout South Tangerang City. The realisation of new PJU construction has currently reached around 20 per cent and is targeted for completion by the fourth quarter of 2026. To meet this target, the Transportation Agency is implementing a strategy of accelerating project administration accompanied by routine monitoring of work progress in the field.

Unlike previous years, the 2026 Tangsel Terang programme is accompanied by the implementation of more modern and energy-efficient technology. All new streetlights are gradually using LED lamps to replace SON-T lamps, which are considered more efficient in electricity usage and have a longer lifespan. In addition, the Transportation Agency is also improving the security of the PJU electrical installation system by using Residual Current Circuit Breaker with Overcurrent Protection (RCBO) on the electrical panels. This technology provides three layers of protection simultaneously: against short circuits, electrical overload, and current leakage, making PJU operations safer and more reliable.

Ayep stated that this year’s PJU construction is prioritised based on community proposals through the Development Planning Deliberation (Musrenbang), city roads with local secondary status that lack lighting, as well as neighbourhood and footpaths under the Tangsel Terang programme. “Our focus is on areas that have not had street lighting so that the benefits can be directly felt by the community,” he said. He acknowledged several challenges in implementing the programme, including fluctuations in PJU material prices influenced by rising logistics costs and some resistance from residents regarding the placement of light poles. “We ask for the support and cooperation of the community so that this PJU construction can proceed smoothly. Our hope is that all construction and repair targets can be completed according to plan so that the benefits of the Tangsel Terang programme are truly felt by the people of South Tangerang City,” he said.
