South Sumatra Provincial Government Repatriates 14 Indonesian Migrant Workers Victims of Trafficking in Cambodia

Palembang (ANTARA) - The South Sumatra Provincial Government (Pemprov Sumsel) has repatriated 14 Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) from Palembang who became victims of suspected human trafficking offences (TPPO) in Cambodia. The group arrived at Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II International Airport in Palembang on Monday around 12:55 WIB and exited through the arrivals gate at 13:05 WIB. They were then directed to a special bus to undergo administrative procedures before being reunited with their families. South Sumatra Governor Herman Deru stated that the incident should serve as a lesson for the public to avoid being easily lured by non-procedural job offers abroad. “The intention to become a breadwinner is good, but opportunities are also available locally if utilised properly,” he said. According to him, it is better to choose clear and safe employment rather than taking significant risks for promises of high income. “It is better to have small but certain results than to take big risks with uncertain outcomes. Do not become victims again,” he added. All the PMI were reported to be in stable condition after travelling from Jakarta and have been reunited with their respective families. Pemprov Sumsel assures that it will continue to strengthen supervision and education for the public to prevent similar cases, while also improving protection for citizens working overseas.
