South Sumatra Police Tighten Oversight to Prevent Illegal Firearms Circulation
South Sumatra Provincial Police (Polda Sumsel) is partnering with the Indonesian Shooting Association (Perbakin) to prevent the circulation of illegal firearms.
In a meeting with Perbakin Sumsel officials, South Sumatra Police Chief Inspector General Sandi Nugroho stated that the circulation and misuse of illegal firearms remain widespread and are frequently utilised in criminal activities across Indonesia.
Sandi stressed that oversight of civilian possession and use of firearms must be conducted strictly to prevent potential misuse that could threaten public safety. “Oversight of firearm possession and use must remain conducted strictly. Prevention must always be prioritised to maintain public security,” he said in a written statement on Wednesday (11 March).
He noted that the circulation of illegal firearms, including improvised weapons and modified airsoft guns resembling actual firearms, poses a serious threat to public safety and order.
Consequently, he ordered an evaluation of standard operating procedures (SOP) for firearm use to be conducted periodically. Additionally, Sandi requested that oversight of civilian firearm possession be continuously strengthened.
“This is important to ensure that all firearm possession remains under oversight in accordance with applicable legal provisions,” he said.
