South Sumatra Police Destroy Rp 2.2 Billion in Narcotics, Saving 34,000 Lives
The Directorate of Narcotics Investigation of the South Sumatra Regional Police (Polda Sumsel) has destroyed narcotics evidence resulting from the uncovering of 25 cases across the South Sumatra region. The destruction of the narcotics is claimed to have saved 34,252 lives. The evidence destruction was carried out in the lobby of the Polda Sumsel Narcotics Directorate Building on Tuesday (9/6/2026). The process was led by the Deputy Director of the Polda Sumsel Narcotics Directorate and witnessed by representatives from the South Sumatra High Prosecutor’s Office, the Polda Sumsel Forensic Laboratory Division, the Directorate of Detainees and Evidence, the Internal Affairs Division, the Public Relations Division, legal advisors, and other relevant parties. The destroyed evidence was the result of uncovering narcotics distribution networks involving 37 suspects from various areas in South Sumatra, including Palembang, Prabumulih, North Musi Rawas, Musi Banyuasin, Banyuasin, Lubuklinggau, Ogan Ilir, Ogan Komering Ilir, and Muara Enim. The evidence destroyed, after portions were set aside for evidentiary purposes in trials and laboratory examination, consisted of 2,973.41 grams of crystal methamphetamine, 1,054 ecstasy pills, 142 millilitres of etomidate, and 167.91 millilitres of synthetic cannabinoids. Beyond the potential to damage tens of thousands of lives, the seized evidence had an estimated economic value of Rp 2,294,108,000. The Deputy Director of the Polda Sumsel Narcotics Directorate emphasised that the destruction of evidence is a crucial part of a transparent law enforcement process and a form of accountability to the public for every successfully uncovered case. ‘Every gram of narcotics that we manage to seize and destroy means there are members of the community we have managed to protect from the impact of drug abuse. This is not just about legal action but about saving the future of the younger generation and maintaining the social resilience of the South Sumatran community,’ he asserted. According to him, the illicit trafficking of narcotics remains a serious threat that can damage health, destroy family futures, and trigger various other criminal acts. Therefore, Polda Sumsel’s Narcotics Directorate will continue to strengthen law enforcement efforts, network mapping, and sustainable prevention. The destruction process was carried out using strict and accountable procedures. The evidence was destroyed by being blended and mixed with liquid until it could not be reused, witnessed directly by all parties present and recorded in an official report. On the same occasion, the Head of Public Relations of Polda Sumsel, Senior Commissioner Nandang Mu’min Wijaya, stated that the success in uncovering cases and destroying the evidence demonstrates the commitment of Polda Sumsel in protecting the community from the increasingly complex threat of narcotics. ‘The eradication of drugs cannot be done by law enforcement officers alone. It requires the concern and involvement of all elements of society. Therefore, we urge the public to be brave enough to report if they know of any narcotics distribution activities in their respective environments. Every piece of information provided is very meaningful in saving the nation’s generation from the dangers of drugs,’ he said. Polda Sumsel confirmed it will continue to enhance prevention and enforcement measures against all illicit narcotics distribution networks in the South Sumatra region. Additionally, public education and participation remain important factors in creating a healthy, safe, and drug abuse-free environment.
