South Sumatra Police Collaborate with SKK Migas to Accelerate Legalisation of Community Oil Wells
Palembang, VIVA – The South Sumatra Regional Police (Polda Sumsel) is strengthening its commitment to supporting national strategic policies in the energy sector through synergy with upstream oil and gas stakeholders. South Sumatra Police Chief, Inspector General Sandi Nugroho, received a working visit from SKK Migas representatives to discuss accelerating the governance of community oil wells to integrate them into a legal and sustainable system.
The meeting, held on Tuesday, 21 April 2026, in the Delegation Room of the Presisi Building at Polda Sumsel headquarters, served as a strategic forum to align policies between law enforcement authorities and energy sector regulators. The main focus of the discussion was factual verification in the field as well as concrete steps to transform community oil activities from illegal practices into legal ones.
Sandi emphasised that Polda Sumsel plays a crucial role in ensuring the transformation process runs orderly, safely, and in accordance with regulations. He stressed that the legalisation of community oil wells not only aims to increase production but also to guarantee workplace safety and environmental protection.
“Legality is not just about permits, but also about compliance with safety and environmental standards. We ensure the entire process runs according to the rules to support the national oil lifting targets,” said Sandi.
This step is part of the support for the government’s priority programme in realising national energy self-sufficiency. The implementation of this policy also refers to the latest energy sector regulations, including arrangements for managing community wells to provide real contributions to state revenues.
In its execution, Polda Sumsel along with SKK Migas will conduct integrated field supervision and verification. Musi Banyuasin Regency (Muba) is projected as the pilot area for implementing community oil well governance in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
This transformation is expected to have strategic impacts, including curbing illegal drilling practices, reducing workplace accident risks, preventing environmental pollution, and eliminating potential public order disturbances in illegal mining areas. With a legal and structured system, communities can work safely while contributing to the national economy.
Sandi also emphasised that there will be no tolerance for illegal activities that continue outside official mechanisms. Law enforcement will be carried out firmly against parties that violate the provisions.
