South Sumatra Police Chief Urges Youth to Become Guardians of Public Order, Highlights Threats from Drugs to AI
South Sumatra Police Chief Inspector General Sandi Nugroho has invited the younger generation to take part in maintaining public security and order (Kamtibmas).
According to him, current security challenges are increasingly complex, requiring the involvement of all elements of society. Sandi stressed that the police cannot work alone in keeping the situation safe and conducive.
Support from local government, the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the Regional Leadership Coordination Forum (Forkopimda), community leaders, and the younger generation is an important part of facing various security issues.
“The existence of the police has been proven throughout history — just four days after Indonesia’s independence, the Special Police already existed and has supported the government to this day. The spirit of the 17 August Proclamation is still burning, now fuelled further by the National Police Service Day on 21 August,” he said on Wednesday, 26 August 2026.
According to Sandi, this fighting spirit must be translated into collective work in facing today’s security challenges. One area of concern is the involvement of young people in safeguarding their own communities.
“The police are not capable of working alone. Without the support of the local government, without the support of the Council Chairman, of our TNI colleagues, all Forkopimda members, and the public at large, the police will not be able to work properly,” he said.
For this reason, Sandi asked the public not to hand over security matters entirely to the police. According to him, a safe environment is a shared responsibility.
“Let us maintain security and order in our communities together, because we realise and believe that security belongs to all of us,” he said.
Sandi also highlighted the challenges facing the younger generation amid technological developments. According to him, technological progress must be used for productive purposes, not become a gateway to new problems.
A number of threats such as drug abuse, bullying, and the misuse of technology, including the modification of Artificial Intelligence (AI), are things that the younger generation needs to understand.
The police chief asked students and community organisations to fill their youth with various positive activities that can serve as provisions for the future.
“Young people, community organisations, and students are certainly the hope of parents to become the jewels of future leadership. Therefore, the present time needs to be filled with positive things that can become capital for the future,” he said.
