South Sumatra LRT Promotes Public Transport Use at Car Free Day
Palembang (ANTARA) - PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) Regional Division III Palembang, together with the South Sumatra Light Rail Management Agency (BPKARSS), campaigned for the use of public transport through an event at the Car Free Day (CFD) area of Cinde Station, Palembang, on Sunday, as part of the 8th anniversary celebrations of the South Sumatra LRT.
KAI Divre III Palembang Public Relations Manager Aida Suryanti stated that the campaign aims to raise public awareness about switching from private vehicles to more efficient, environmentally friendly, and sustainable public transport. “Through this campaign, we want to invite the public to make the South Sumatra LRT part of a modern lifestyle that supports urban mobility. With fares starting from IDR 5,000 to IDR 10,000, people can enjoy a safe, comfortable, and punctual journey while contributing to reducing congestion and air pollution in Palembang,” she said.
According to her, using public transport offers various benefits, from travel time efficiency to cost savings, as people do not need to spend on fuel, parking, or private vehicle maintenance. Furthermore, increased use of public transport will have a positive environmental impact by reducing carbon emissions and air pollution, thereby supporting the creation of a greener and more sustainable city.
The campaign featured various activities, including a fun walk, group exercise, a marching band performance, and games and quizzes with prizes, which were attended by the public, LRT users, and CFD visitors. As part of the campaign, KAI Divre III Palembang also opened a service and promotion booth for KAI services and provided free health check-ups from the Mediska Palembang Clinic for fun walk participants and people active in the CFD area.
Cinde Station is one of the stations with high passenger activity due to its location in the centre of Palembang and its integration with various community activity centres. According to data from KAI Divre III Palembang, the number of South Sumatra LRT users boarding and alighting at Cinde Station from January to 18 July 2026 reached 110,907 passengers, or an average of 557 passengers per day. “This figure shows that the South Sumatra LRT is increasingly trusted by the public as a reliable and comfortable urban transport mode,” she said.
Aida expressed hope that more people will make the South Sumatra LRT their primary choice for daily activities, thereby supporting the creation of a more environmentally friendly urban transport system. KAI Divre III Palembang and BPKARSS are committed to continuously improving service quality, safety, security, and travel comfort so that the South Sumatra LRT increasingly becomes the main choice for the people of Palembang.
Meanwhile, Palembang City Government Expert Staff for Population and Civil Registration Affairs, Edison, who attended the event, said that choosing public transport not only provides travel convenience but also represents a form of environmental concern. “By riding the LRT, people make a real contribution to reducing congestion, curbing carbon emissions, saving energy, and creating better air quality for Palembang City,” said Edison. He emphasised that the South Sumatra LRT is an icon of pride and a long-term investment that must be preserved together.
