South Sulawesi Becomes First Province in Indonesia to Launch 2026 Economic Census

South Sulawesi has become the first province in Indonesia to carry out the Launching of the 2026 Economic Census, held by Statistics Indonesia (BPS RI). BPS RI expressed appreciation for the South Sulawesi Provincial Government, which was deemed highly enthusiastic in supporting the census implementation. This was conveyed by Head of BPS RI Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti whilst opening the South Sulawesi Province 2026 Economic Census Launching, taking place at the Pattern Room of the South Sulawesi Governor’s Office on Wednesday. “South Sulawesi is the first province where we have launched the Economic Census. We appreciate the Governor, who was very enthusiastic in bringing together the regional heads. Let us jointly make this Economic Census a success,” Amalia stated. “This census is a complete and thorough data collection without exception. It will cover business sectors, economic activities, right down to households, in order to capture the economic dynamics occurring in society,” she explained. According to Amalia, the successful implementation of the 2026 Economic Census will yield significant benefits for the regions, particularly in formulating more targeted development policies. “If this is successful, regional heads will gain tremendous advantages because the data produced will serve as a basis for more precise policies,” Amalia emphasised. Meanwhile, South Sulawesi Governor Andi Sudirman Sulaiman said the execution of the Economic Census is highly important as it is the first in Indonesia within the national preparation series. He also stressed the need for more detailed economic mapping, including the types of community businesses, business actors, as well as involvement in cooperatives and other economic activities. “We require a more detailed mapping of the economy, including the types of community businesses and involvement in cooperatives. We also request guidance from the Head of BPS so that we can better understand the implementation,” Andi Sudirman stated. Andi Sudirman also appreciated the spirit of the BPS ranks in conducting the data collection. He also urged all parties to ensure the data gathered is truly accurate and beneficial for regional and national development. “Ensure that the data collected will provide benefits for all of us. Let us make the 2026 Economic Census a success,” he added.
