South Papua Province Launches Bright Village Programme in Mappi Regency
Jayapura — The South Papua Provincial Government will introduce the “Kampung Terang” (Bright Village) Programme in Mappi Regency to meet the basic needs of the community.
“We will give special attention to Mappi Regency this year, where the Kampung Terang programme that was previously implemented in Boven Digoel Regency will be carried out in Mappi Regency in 2026,” said South Papua Deputy Governor Paskalis Imadawa in a press statement received by Antara in Jayapura on Tuesday.
According to Paskalis, the South Papua Provincial Budget totals more than 900 billion rupiah, with the majority allocated for salary payments and incentives for provincial government employees.
“The remaining funds of approximately 200 billion rupiah must be divided amongst all Regional Apparatus Organisations (OPD) to implement development programmes,” he said.
He explained that the provincial government held a meeting with residents of Yagatsu Village in Haju District, Mappi Regency, as part of a Ramadan safari on Monday (9 March).
“In that meeting, the community expressed their aspirations regarding fundamental issues ranging from electricity supply, education, to transportation,” he added.
Haju District Head Tarsis Regoi stated that Haju District comprises 19 villages inhabited by three major ethnic groups and is the oldest district, which later gave rise to Asue District.
“In this region, several basic facilities have indeed been provided, such as a health centre and junior secondary school, but we hope the government’s support for development will be more optimal,” he said.
He added that infrastructure conditions also require attention, and what the community currently wants to experience is electricity, as many villages still do not have evenly distributed electrical supply.
