South Lampung Government Strengthens Mitigation as Mount Anak Krakatau Activity Increases
The Government of South Lampung Regency (Pemkab Lamsel), Lampung Province, is strengthening preparedness in the face of developments in the volcanic activity of Mount Anak Krakatau (GAK). The move is being taken through cross-sector coordination and the implementation of measured mitigation efforts to protect public safety, particularly in coastal areas.
The Head of the South Lampung Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Maturidi, explained that the regional government continues to monitor developments in the volcano’s activity based on official information from the relevant agencies. He assured that all regional apparatus and stakeholders are now in a state of readiness.
“The eruptive activity currently occurring is a process of energy release from within the mountain, so it has the potential to reduce the likelihood of a larger explosion. Nevertheless, the regional government continues to step up mitigation measures as a form of anticipation of various possibilities,” said Maturidi in Kalianda on Thursday (9/7/2026).
As part of the strengthened preparedness, BPBD Lamsel has held intensive coordination with the TNI, the National Police, Basarnas, BMKG, PVMBG, and sub-district and village governments. The main focus of this coordination is to ensure the readiness of personnel, infrastructure, and emergency response procedures should they be needed at any time.
Beyond technical readiness, Maturidi emphasised the importance of disseminating information to residents in South Lampung’s coastal areas. The public is asked to always refer to official information and not be easily swayed by issues or hoaxes whose truth cannot be verified.
The regional government has also instructed all sub-district heads and village heads in coastal areas to conduct field audits of safety facilities. This includes checking the condition of evacuation route signage, ensuring assembly points are ready for use, and carrying out regular inspections of all disaster management facilities at the village level.
“We certainly do not want a disaster to occur. But preparedness must be continually improved. We must not be caught off guard. Mitigation must continue so that if an emergency situation arises, all elements are ready to act swiftly and appropriately,” stressed Maturidi.
The South Lampung Regency Government has assured that monitoring of Mount Anak Krakatau’s volcanic activity will continue to be carried out intensively together with the authorised agencies. The public is urged to remain calm, heighten vigilance, and always follow the directions of the volcano monitoring officers for the sake of collective safety.
