South Lampung Government Strengthens Mitigation as Mount Anak Krakatau Activity Increases
The South Lampung Regency administration in Lampung Province is strengthening its preparedness for the developing volcanic activity of Mount Anak Krakatau. This measure is being implemented through cross-sector coordination and measured mitigation to protect public safety, particularly in coastal areas. The Head of the South Lampung Regency Disaster Management Agency, Maturidi, explained that the local government is continuously monitoring the volcano’s activity based on official information from relevant agencies. He confirmed that all regional apparatus and stakeholders are now on standby. “The current eruptive activity is a process of energy release from within the mountain, which could potentially reduce the likelihood of a larger explosion. However, the local government is still enhancing mitigation measures as a precaution against all possibilities,” Maturidi stated in Kalianda on Thursday. As part of strengthening preparedness, the agency has held intensive coordination meetings with the military, police, search and rescue agency, meteorology and geophysics agency, volcanology centre, and sub-district and village governments. The main focus of this coordination is to ensure the readiness of personnel, infrastructure, and emergency response procedures should they be required. Beyond technical readiness, Maturidi stressed the importance of public awareness campaigns for residents in the coastal areas of South Lampung. The public is urged to always refer to official information and not be easily influenced by unverified issues or hoaxes. The local government has also instructed all sub-district and village heads in coastal areas to conduct field audits of safety facilities. This includes checking the condition of evacuation route signs, ensuring assembly points are ready for use, and conducting regular checks on all disaster management equipment at the village level. “We certainly do not wish for a disaster to occur. However, preparedness must continue to be improved. We must not be complacent. Mitigation must be carried out so that if an emergency occurs, all elements are ready to act quickly and precisely,” Maturidi emphasised. The South Lampung Regency Government confirmed that monitoring of Mount Anak Krakatau’s volcanic activity will continue intensively with the relevant authorities. The public is urged to remain calm, increase vigilance, and always follow the directions of volcano monitoring officers for collective safety.
