South Korean Chemical Firm Dongsung Opens Largest Production Facility in Karawang
Minister of Investment and Downstreaming/Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Rosan Perkasa Roeslani attended the inauguration of Dongsung Chemical, a South Korean chemical company producing polyurethane (PU), in Karawang, West Java.
During the ceremony marking the plant's operational launch, Rosan emphasised the significance of the investment as an indicator that Indonesia remains an attractive investment destination, even for companies with high-technology products.
"The presence of this factory once again proves that Indonesia is not only still an attractive investment destination in the eyes of investors, but is also trusted as a centre for the production and export of high-technology products. This investment will create jobs and strengthen Indonesia's position in the global supply chain," Rosan said in a press statement on Friday (2/5).
Built on 82,000 square metres of land with a building area of 23,000 square metres, the plant is the largest production facility owned by the company, exceeding even its production capacity in its home country.
Dongsung Chemical's products are used across various sectors, including automotive (seats, headrests, interior linings), footwear (shoe soles and adhesives), household goods (mattresses, sofas, waterproof coatings), as well as manufacturing and construction (sealants, adhesives, surface protectors).
Rosan also stated that the government is actively and continuously strengthening cooperation with Indonesia's strategic partners to invest in the country. He noted that, under the direction of President Prabowo, Indonesia is very open for business, particularly ventures aligned with the government's agenda of promoting industrial downstreaming and creating quality employment.
For Dongsung Chemical, the Karawang plant is a crucial part of the company's long-term growth plan. Dongsung Chemical Chairman Baek Jeong-ho said the investment in Indonesia is not merely about adding production capacity but also forms part of the company's strategy for continued expansion.
"This new factory in Indonesia is the best PU system production base in Southeast Asia, serving as a strategic global hub reaching from Asia to Latin America and Europe. This is not simply an expansion of production facilities but also an important milestone in broadening Dongsung Chemical's technology and global vision," Baek said.
