South Korea urges swift global action to address North Korea's nuclear programme
Istanbul (ANTARA) - South Korea has urged the international community to take swift action to address North Korea’s nuclear programme, describing it as the most urgent threat to the global non-proliferation system. According to Yonhap news agency on Tuesday, Deputy Foreign Minister Jeong Yeon-doo made the statement during the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) conference in New York, emphasising that Pyongyang remains a unique challenge after withdrawing from the treaty and continuing its nuclear weapons development. “North Korea is the only case that has benefited from the NPT regime, announced its withdrawal, and openly continued the development of nuclear weapons, thus remaining the most pressing challenge to the non-proliferation regime,” Jeong said. She urged the international community to deliver a unified message that North Korea’s security and economic future depend on returning to the treaty framework. Jeong also called on Russia to cease its military cooperation with Pyongyang, warning that such ties undermine UN Security Council resolutions and the broader non-proliferation regime. The NPT, in force since 1970, is a fundamental global treaty aimed at preventing the spread of nuclear weapons and promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy, with review conferences held every five years to assess compliance.
