South Korea and the United States, following the implementation of the Nuclear Consultative Group meeting, have reaffirmed their commitment to the shared goal of denuclearising North Korea, according to South Korea’s Ministry of Defence. South Korea and the US held the sixth meeting of the Nuclear Consultative Group in Seoul on Thursday. The meeting was led by South Korea’s Defence Policy Chief, Kim Hong-cheol, and US Deputy Assistant Secretary of War for Nuclear Deterrence, Robert Soofer, the ministry’s statement said. Additionally, the US reaffirmed its commitment to providing stronger deterrence guarantees to South Korea against North Korea by using all available US capabilities, including nuclear forces, the statement added. The decision to form a joint consultative group on nuclear issues was made in April 2023 as part of the Washington Declaration signed by the leaders of South Korea and the US.
