The Regional Research and Innovation Agency (Brida) of South Kalimantan Province, together with the provincial office of the Ministry of Law, is establishing an Intellectual Property (IP) Centre to protect local research and innovation outcomes as part of efforts to strengthen intellectual property services.

Head of South Kalimantan Brida, Thaufik Hidayat, stated in Banjarbaru on Wednesday that the establishment of the IP Centre was discussed in a coordination meeting between Brida Kalsel and the Regional Development Planning, Research, and Innovation Agencies (Bapperida) from regencies and cities across South Kalimantan. The move is intended to unify intellectual property management in the region.

He said that IP protection is becoming increasingly crucial as innovation grows across various sectors, making it necessary for local government to ensure that every research result, discovery, or innovative work receives adequate legal protection.

“The establishment of the IP Centre at Brida Kalsel and at regency/city Brida or Bapperida offices aims to accelerate intellectual property rights protection services while encouraging more community and local government innovations to be officially recorded,” he said.

Meanwhile, Head of the South Kalimantan Regional Office of the Ministry of Law, Alex Cosmas Pinem, said the formation of the IP Centre follows a circular from the Minister of Law instructing all regional offices to coordinate with their respective local Brida agencies.

According to him, the IP Centre will serve as a service hub conducting inventory, information dissemination, publication, and facilitation of IP recording and registration for the public, researchers, innovators, and local government to obtain legal protection.

“The Ministry of Law will provide assistance for the protection of research results, innovations, technology, and creative works originating in South Kalimantan, thereby enhancing regional competitiveness while encouraging innovation-based economic growth,” Alex said.
