South Jakarta Targets 6,023 Neighbourhood Units for Waste Sorting via Biopori and Modern Teba
The South Jakarta City Government is targeting 6,023 neighbourhood units (RT) to implement waste sorting through biopori and modern teba methods to support reducing the volume of waste sent to the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Treatment Facility (TPST).
"The achievement target has been set, namely a total of approximately 6,023 RTs throughout the South Jakarta area will all implement waste sorting," said South Jakarta Mayor Syafrin Liputo at the South Jakarta Mayor’s office on Wednesday.
He stated that the target has been socialised to all areas as part of the implementation of DKI Jakarta Governor Instruction Number 5 of 2026 concerning the Movement for Waste Sorting and Processing at Source. According to him, waste sorting is carried out from the household level so that organic and inorganic waste can be managed more effectively.
Meanwhile, South Jakarta Assistant for Economy and Development Iwan K Santoso said socialisation is still being conducted across the 6,023 RTs and 578 community units (RW) locally so that all areas understand the waste sorting mechanism. The government, he said, has prepared an accelerated implementation schedule so that all RTs can meet the set targets. "Of the 6,023 RTs, it is now mandatory to have and create jumbo biopori holes," Iwan stated.
Iwan said all RTs, RWs, sub-district offices, district offices and other government offices are expected to have these waste management facilities. As is known, the South Jakarta City Government is intensifying education and socialisation so that a sustainable change in community behaviour in managing waste can be realised. This is in line with the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government’s commitment to stop the practice of open dumping starting from 1 August 2026. Therefore, the movement to sort waste from home is considered a crucial step to reduce the burden on the Bantargebang TPST, which is increasingly approaching its maximum capacity.
