South Jakarta Sub-District Office for Food Security, Marine and Agriculture urges residents to check livestock health before purchasing sacrificial animals for Eid al-Adha

JAKARTA (ANTARA) - Ahead of Eid al-Adha 1447 Hijriyah, the South Jakarta Sub-District Office for Food Security, Marine and Agriculture (KPKP) has reminded residents to check the health and origin of sacrificial animals before purchasing.

‘Definitely, seek out trusted livestock sellers—those with established reputations, not first-time vendors,’ said South Jakarta KPKP head Ridho Sosro Yudyantoro during a telephone interview on Tuesday.

He urged residents to buy sacrificial animals only from reputable sellers.

Residents were also advised to inspect the physical condition of the animals, ensuring they appear healthy and free from visible illness.

According to Ridho, technically, buyers must confirm the animals are healthy, of sufficient age, and free from physical defects.

He added that administrative documentation, including veterinary health certificates and livestock origin papers, must also be verified.

‘There must be export recommendations from the origin location and import recommendations for entry into Jakarta,’ Ridho said.

These checks ensure the health, quality, and suitability of animals for slaughter.

The inspections cover both religious compliance and physical health to guarantee the animals are free from infectious or zoonotic diseases and produce meat that is Safe, Healthy, Whole, and Halal (ASUH).

South Jakarta KPKP inspected 18,575 sacrificial animals over the week leading up to Eid al-Adha.

During the inspections, six animals were found to be ill, with symptoms in the legs, thighs, and lato-lato—commonly known as Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD).
