South Jakarta PKK Hopes Betawi Batik Artisans Can Strengthen Cultural Identity
The Family Welfare Empowerment Movement (TP PKK) of South Jakarta hopes that Betawi batik artisans can strengthen cultural identity. “We want this batik to become more widely known by the public. Moreover, Jakarta is currently moving towards becoming a global city. Therefore, it is hoped that their products can penetrate the international market through various exhibitions,” said South Jakarta TP PKK Chairwoman Nurul Azizah Syafrin in Jakarta on Monday. Azizah made the statement while visiting two Betawi batik artisan centres, namely Rumah Batik Palbatu in Tebet and Batik Betawi Terogong in Cilandak. The visit aimed to observe firsthand the various innovations and creativity of the artisans, which can serve as a reference for the future development of South Jakarta batik. “Especially regarding models and distinctive characteristics. We also want to invite them to collaborate to advance the South Jakarta Dekranasda,” she said. Meanwhile, at Batik Betawi Terogong, motifs of betel leaves, ondel-ondel figures, and Betawi dancers hold a special appeal that reflects the richness of Betawi culture. “Both places we visited have their own distinctive characteristics or advantages. However, the creativity and innovation of both are excellent and deserve a thumbs up,” she said. According to her, the existence of Betawi batik artisans is an important asset for South Jakarta. For this reason, support for creative MSME players needs to be continuously strengthened so they can compete not only at the DKI Jakarta provincial level, but also nationally and internationally. “The more Betawi batik artisans that develop, the stronger the cultural identity of South Jakarta that can be recognised by the wider community,” said Azizah.
