South Jakarta Mayor Considers Processing Sailfin Catfish into Livestock Feed: Currently Under Study
JAKARTA - The Mayor of South Jakarta, M. Anwar, is considering utilising sailfin catfish that are being culled by processing them into livestock feed. However, he stated that the matter is still under study by the DKI Jakarta Food Security, Maritime Affairs, and Fisheries Agency (KPKP). “It’s currently under study. I said, ‘Can it be used for livestock feed?’ It would be a shame if not; if it can, it would be great to use it for livestock feed, as it would be quite beneficial,” Anwar said when met at the South Jakarta Mayor’s Office on Wednesday (22/4/2026). Therefore, utilisation as livestock feed is considered a more efficient alternative. Currently, the South Jakarta City Government through the KPKP Sub-District Agency will conduct sailfin catfish capture operations twice a week. The captures are now focused on the Setu Babakan connecting channel. Anwar emphasised that efforts to control the invasive fish are important, especially in upstream water areas. “(The long-term target) is until there is really no more of that fish, clean. If the upstream isn’t fixed, the downstream will definitely have a lot. Water flows from upstream to downstream,” Anwar explained. The Head of the Fisheries Section of the South Jakarta KPKP Sub-District Agency, Arief Prakoso, said that they are also studying the utilisation of sailfin catfish as organic fertiliser material and livestock feed. “For this sailfin catfish, the results of the captures will be sent to the Environmental Agency Sub-District. There are already designated locations that can be utilised as organic fertiliser as planned,” Arief said on the same occasion.
