Jakarta (ANTARA) - The South Jakarta Environment Sub-agency (Sudin LH Jaksel) is addressing the pile of rubbish beside the railway tracks at Pasar Minggu Station by cleaning and clearing waste from the site.

“Our officers collect rubbish at this location every day to prevent accumulation,” said the Head of the South Jakarta Administrative City Environment Sub-agency, Rizky Febriyanto, when contacted in Jakarta on Monday.

He explained that the rubbish comes not only from residents living around the site, but also from people from other areas passing through who dump waste carelessly in the area.

“However, once the rubbish has been cleared, there are still certain individuals who dump waste illegally again, so the piles keep recurring,” he said.

He stressed that keeping the environment clean is not solely the government’s responsibility, but requires an active role from all members of the public not to litter.

As a follow-up, Sudin LH Jakarta Selatan will strengthen monitoring at the site together with relevant parties, conduct public education, and step up law enforcement against perpetrators of illegal dumping in accordance with prevailing regulations.

Sudin LH Jakarta Selatan also urged the public to dispose of rubbish at designated places and times, and to make use of the available waste management services.

The public is also expected to support the culture of sorting and managing waste at its source in order to achieve a clean, healthy and sustainable environment.
