South Jakarta has 36 flood spots

JAKARTA (JP): About thirty-six spots in four districts of South Jakarta are vulnerable to flooding, a municipal official has said.

The four districts are Kebayoran Lama, Pesanggrahan, Pancoran, and Tebet, South Jakarta Mayoralty Spokesman D.J. Siboro said on Friday.

The mayoralty and southern parts of the capital are situated in the water catchment area and the rainfall there is high causing the flooding that regularly hits the area.

Heavy downpours in Bogor, Depok, early this year have caused areas along the rivers of Ciliwung, Krukut and Pesanggrahan to be submerged, Antara reported on Saturday.

Environmental issues such as illegal buildings on riverbanks, littering, and the decreasing numbers of trees that preserve groundwater content are other causes, said Siboro.

Siboro called on the public to help clean up clogged up gutters and waterways and appealed to them not to use waterways as dump sites.

On Friday, floods hit areas between Lenteng Agung and Depok and paralyzed traffic following heavy downpours on Thursday. (04)
