South Jakarta Environmental Agency Develops Organic Waste Management Innovations

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The South Jakarta Environmental Agency (Sudin LH Jaksel) is developing innovative strategies for managing organic waste through more effective and sustainable composting methods. “We have developed various innovations in organic waste management, including the Biopori Jumbo and Teba Modern methods,” said the Head of Sudin LH South Jakarta, Dedy Setiono, in Jakarta on Thursday. He stated that these methods are believed to be an effective way to reduce, or even address, organic waste so that it is not disposed of in final disposal sites. He explained that Biopori Jumbo is a large-scale organic waste processing method using plastic drums with a capacity of around 30 litres that are perforated and buried in the ground. “This method is a development of the conventional biopore infiltration hole with a larger capacity to accommodate kitchen waste and dry leaves,” Dedy clarified. Meanwhile, he said, Teba Modern is an independent organic waste management method based on local wisdom in the form of a composting pit resembling a well that is 2 to 3 metres deep, reinforced with concrete and equipped with a lid. “This method is expected to process organic waste directly from the source while reducing the waste load sent to the Bantar Gebang Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST),” Dedy stated. He also urged residents to get into the habit of sorting waste from the dining table as a concrete step towards making South Jakarta free of organic waste, particularly in managing food waste and kitchen processing waste. “We have directed all levels at the sub-district to provide education to the community regarding these innovations. The goal is for organic waste to be processed into something useful, even with economic value,” Dedy revealed.
