South Jakarta City Government to Conduct Operation to Capture Janitor Fish in Setu Babakan Connecting Channel

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The South Jakarta City Government (Pemkot Jaksel) plans to conduct the capture of janitor fish in the connecting channel (Phb) of Setu Babakan, Jagakarsa. “Tomorrow, the planned activity is a simultaneous janitor fish capture operation across DKI Jakarta; for the South Jakarta area, it will be carried out in the Setu Babakan Phb channel,” said the Head of the Fisheries Section of the Food Security, Maritime Affairs, and Agriculture Sub-District Office (Sudin KPKP) of South Jakarta, Arief Prakoso, when contacted in Jakarta on Thursday. He stated that the janitor fish capture operation in South Jakarta will take place on Friday (17/4), starting at 07:30 WIB, beginning with an activity briefing, followed by the capture, destruction, and burial of the caught janitor fish. The activity, involving various parties, is expected to proceed smoothly. Some of the involved parties include the Sudin KPKP Jaksel, the Centre for Production Inspection and Certification of Fishery Products (PPISHP) of DKI Jakarta, the Water Resources Sub-District Office (Sudin SDA) of South Jakarta, the Cleaning Implementation Unit (UPK) of the Water Body of the DKI Jakarta Environmental Agency, officers from the Public Facilities and Infrastructure Handling Unit (PPSU) of Srengseng Sawah Ward, Jagakarsa Sub-District, and the Area Management Unit (UPK) of the Betawi Cultural Village (PBB) Setu Babakan. As is known, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government will carry out river and waterway cleaning as well as janitor fish removal in the capital on Friday (17/4). The fish are considered capable of destroying dykes and also eating other fish and their eggs, thus necessitating their removal. The cleaning activity also aims to improve waterways, dredge mud, and perform other tasks as preparation for the rainy season expected in September 2026.
