South Jakarta City Government Mandates Businesses to Manage Waste Independently
The South Jakarta Administrative City Government (Pemkot Jaksel) has mandated businesses to process waste independently to reduce shipments to the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST) in Bekasi City, West Java. “For businesses such as hotels, restaurants, and cafes, they will be required to use modern teba,” said Hendrik Mindo Sihombing, Head of Waste Management at the South Jakarta Environmental Agency, in Jakarta on Friday (8/5), quoted from Antara. Hendrik stated that they will prepare regulations for independent waste processing targeting hotels, restaurants, cafes, and industrial areas. He said the regulations will also include administrative sanctions for companies that do not process their own waste. “We will make the rules because there are administrative sanctions for industrial areas or companies that do not process their own waste,” he said. According to him, the policy is part of the target to completely stop waste shipments to Bantargebang on 1 January 2027. Modern teba is a system for processing organic waste based on large soil holes used to hold waste with greater capacity. Unused absorption wells The agency also targets unused absorption wells to be repurposed into modern teba as waste containers. Pemkot Jaksel also utilises wood waste from the destruction of old mattresses, wardrobes, and furniture as “wood chips” to accelerate the composting process in modern teba. In addition to businesses, schools and residential areas are directed to process organic waste independently using jumbo biopori or losida. Therefore, waste management cannot solely be the responsibility of the government, but requires the involvement of the community and business actors. “This waste problem is not just the government’s affair, but all elements of society,” he said.
