South Jakarta City Government Has Big Plans, No Longer Sending Waste to Bantargebang by 2027

The South Jakarta City Government (Pemkot Jaksel) targets the cessation of waste shipments to the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST) in 2027. This step follows guidance from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, which states that Bantargebang will no longer accept waste from DKI Jakarta starting that year. “Based on the Minister of Environment’s directive on 6 April 2026, the TPST Bantargebang must not receive DKI Jakarta waste in 2027,” said Hendrik Mindo Sihombing, Head of the Community Participation Section of the South Jakarta Environmental Agency, on Wednesday (6/5/2026), quoted from Antara. The primary focus is directed towards processing organic waste at its source. According to data from the National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN), food waste accounts for 49.87 percent of the total waste volume. Combined with wood and branch waste at around 3 percent, the composition of organic waste exceeds half of the total. “The reduction is focused on organic waste because it has the largest portion,” Hendrik stated. To achieve this target, Pemkot Jaksel is preparing several waste processing methods at the regional level, such as jumbo biopori and modern composting. Jumbo biopori utilises large-capacity containers, from 30 to 120-litre used drums, employed communally to process organic waste. The South Jakarta City Government is promoting the concept of waste processing at the point of origin or zero waste in place, so that waste no longer needs to be transported to Bantargebang. “The quickest way to handle waste is to process it right there on site. So it doesn’t need to be taken all the way to Bantargebang,” Hendrik said. This policy is also a response to the condition of the TPST Bantargebang, which is deemed no longer viable according to the Ministry’s assessment. “Bantargebang is no longer suitable according to the Ministry’s evaluation. Its capacity has exceeded the safe limit,” he added.
