Jakarta (ANTARA) - The South Jakarta City Government (Pemkot Jaksel) is conducting dredging of the Pesanggrahan River through a large-scale community work activity along the border of Kebayoran Lama and Pesanggrahan sub-districts as an effort to reduce flood risks. “The main focus of this community work is the normalisation of riverbanks. Riverbanks that were previously high and had become land caused water to erode the right side, thus risking damage to the embankments,” said South Jakarta Mayor Muhammad Anwar at Danau Cavalio Pesanggrahan, South Jakarta, on Sunday. He stated that this large-scale community work is the first to be carried out across DKI Jakarta after Eid al-Fitr 2026. The activity is focused on normalising riverbanks that have experienced shallowing and structural changes. This condition is assessed to cause water flow to erode the embankment sides and increase the potential for damage. Therefore, mud dredging is being carried out from Sunday until the end of the year with a target volume of around 36,174 cubic metres along 1,244 metres. “Hopefully, with this community work activity, water pooling in the areas along the Pesanggrahan River banks can be reduced,” said Anwar. “If this mud is successfully lifted and the water flow is normalised, Insya Allah, the IKPN area will no longer experience severe flooding,” Anwar added. The South Jakarta City Government is committed to continuing similar activities routinely every week. Meanwhile, the Head of the South Jakarta Water Resources Sub-Department, Santo, explained that the dredging in the Ulujami Ward segment covers a length of 1,444 metres, with the same mud volume of around 36,174 cubic metres. “The mud from the dredging will be transited to several points before finally being disposed of in Ancol,” Santo revealed. During the community work, Anwar along with his staff also released tawes fish. The release of these fish is a common water conservation action, involving the government, TNI/Polri, and residents to scatter thousands of fish seedlings in rivers, reservoirs, or lakes. The activity aims to maintain ecosystem preservation, increase the population of local fish, and provide economic benefits to the local community.
